
Man dies during scuffle at Delhi station; arrested accused get bail within 24 hours
A Delhi Metro security guard died after he was allegedly assaulted during a scuffle at Shahdara railway station in east Delhi, with three of the six accused arrested in the case being granted bail within 24 hours of their arrest. The remaining three accused, all juveniles, were sent to a juvenile home.
The victim, Pankaj Dhama (35), a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, worked as a security guard at the IP Extension Metro station. He was returning to his village after completing his shift when the incident took place on Friday.
According to police, Dhama was travelling on the Yoga Express and was standing near the coach door when the train halted at Shahdara railway station. A dispute broke out amid a rush of passengers trying to board and deboard the train on Platform 3.
The argument soon escalated into a physical altercation, during which Dhama was allegedly punched and kicked by fellow passengers. He was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A video of the incident that surfaced on social media showed chaos on the platform and a police personnel attempting to intervene during the scuffle. The footage also showed Dhama lying on the ground surrounded by bystanders after the assault.
During the investigation, Delhi Police identified six people allegedly involved in the assault. Three of them were found to be juveniles. The three adult accused – Sagar, Prince and Akash – were arrested and produced before a court, which later granted them bail.
The juvenile accused were presented before the Juvenile Justice Board and sent to a juvenile home.
Police have registered a case under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). CCTV footage is being examined and eyewitnesses are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
