India To Construct 14 Schools In Earthquake-Hit Districts Of Nepal

India has committed Nepali Rupees 560.2 million for the construction of 14 schools in earthquake-affected areas of Nepal, continuing its support for the country’s reconstruction and development efforts following devastating earthquakes.

According to a statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu on Wednesday, agreements for the project were signed by the Central Level Project Implementation Unit-Education under Nepal’s Ministry of Education and Sports.

The schools will be built in eight districts, Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Dolakha, Kathmandu, Kavrepalanchowk, Ramechhap and Sindhupalchok, all of which were among the worst-hit regions during major earthquakes in recent years.

Nepal suffered its deadliest earthquake in 2015, an event that claimed nearly 9,000 lives and caused widespread destruction across the country.

Officials said the new school buildings will follow the Nepal government guidelines for earthquake-resilient infrastructure. The facilities are expected to include academic blocks, furnished classrooms, and separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls.

India has previously contributed to Nepal’s post-earthquake rebuilding initiatives. In January 2024, 70 schools across eight districts, along with the Tribhuvan University Central Library in Kathmandu, were completed and handed over to the Nepal government under India’s reconstruction assistance programme.

The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to working closely with Nepal and its institutions on socio-economic development projects, including those linked to post-earthquake recovery.
