‘Democracy will be stronger if 2029 polls held with women quota fully in place’: PM Modi

Two days before Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is scheduled for discussion in a special sitting of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said amendments to the Women Reservation Act should be passed in the Parliament and any delay will be unfortunate and mean a gross injustice to women.

In a letter to women, Modi Tuesday said: “Democracy will become stronger if 2029 LS and various Assembly polls that year are held with women’s reservation fully in place.”

The PM said India’s daughters cannot be asked to endlessly wait for what is rightfully theirs. “When the voice of women becomes stronger in our legislatures, the voice of democracy itself becomes stronger,” he said.

“I seek your blessings and the blessings of crores of women across the length and breadth of India for the upcoming Parliament sitting and for the passage of the constitutional amendment,” he said urging women to write to local MPs encouraging them to participate in the “historic Parliament sitting”.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Parliament is on the verge of “making history”, as a special session prepares to discuss crucial amendments to the Women’s Reservation Act, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

Addressing the Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan in Delhi, PM Modi said the upcoming session is set to conclude a “decades-long wait” for women’s political representation. “The country will take one of the most important decisions of the 21st century. This decision is dedicated to nari shakti,” he said.
