Ahmedabad: Drug mafia targets beggars to test new synthetic drugs to check their effectiveness

The crime branch of Ahmedabad police said they have come to know the modus operandi of the drug mafia, but no complaint has been filed so far.

Ahmedabad: The drug mafia in Gujarat have adopted new ways to test their drugs. The mafia has turned the street beggars into lab rats to conduct trials for new synthetic drugs to check their effectiveness.

If the drug trial becomes successful, they introduce it to other people to sell it in the black market. The report said mafia chooses homeless and beggars from bus stands and railway stations and as well as from walled city areas in Ahmedabad.

The development has put the lives of these beggars at risk. Salim Mohammad, a homeless man who lives on footpath outside Kalupur railway station, is a drug addict and smokes ganja. When another beggar at the footpath offered Salim a new drug, he decided to give it a try. As soon as he took the new drug, he started vomiting and bleeding from the nose.

A labourer identified as Mahesh Datani, who is also homeless, took some powder-like substance to snort which turned him violent. The 25-year-old Datani then banged his hands on the wall so hard that he broke his limbs.

A woman named Mehrunnisa Shaikh consumed a tablet by two unknown men who assured her that the drug will cure several diseases. “The men gave me the tablets and I consumed them with water. Later, they also gave me some milk. After 15 minutes, I started feeling giddy,” the report quoted Shaikh as saying.

The crime branch officials said they have come across such modus operandi by the drug mafia but no complaint has been filed in this regard.
