EVMs, Astra missiles, BrahMos: What’s on PM Modi’s Indonesia agenda
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-day visit to Indonesia, which began on July 6, is expected to deliver significant outcomes across defence, technology, critical minerals and strategic connectivity, according to sources. The visit is aimed at deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries while expanding cooperation in key sectors.
INDIA TO SUPPORT INDONESIA-SPECIFIC EVMS
In a major endorsement of India’s election management model, India will support the development of Indonesia-specific Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), marking a significant step in electoral technology cooperation between the two nations.
INDONESIA TO IMPORT ASTRA MISSILES
On the defence front, Indonesia has decided to import India’s indigenous Astra air-to-air missiles following the demonstrated effectiveness of India’s missile capabilities during Operation Sindoor. The move is expected to further strengthen defence cooperation between New Delhi and Jakarta.
BRAHMOS COOPERATION TO EXPAND
Indonesia is also set to expand its BrahMos missile inventory, with India expected to provide additional coastal defence batteries, enhancing Jakarta’s maritime security capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.
FOCUS ON CRITICAL MINERALS
To strengthen resilient critical mineral supply chains, India will invest in manufacturing steel, nickel and rare earth permanent magnets in Indonesia. The initiative is expected to support both countries’ strategic and industrial priorities.
SABANG PORT PROJECT TO GAIN MOMENTUM
The two countries are also expected to jointly develop Sabang port, a strategically located facility overlooking the Strait of Malacca. Situated around 100 miles from India’s Great Nicobar port project, the development is expected to enhance maritime connectivity and reinforce cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
MODI RECEIVES CEREMONIAL WELCOME, HOLDS BILATERAL TALKS
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Jakarta ahead of his official engagements in Indonesia. Earlier, he held bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Istana Merdeka (Presidential Palace), where the two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across key sectors.
