Former Jharkhand CM and JMM ‘founding patron’ Shibu Soren passes away at 81

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) co-founder Shibu Soren passed away Monday after a prolonged illness in New Delhi. He was 81.

Shibu Soren was undergoing treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a month for kidney-related problems.

Sharing the news of Soren’s demise on X, his son and Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren wrote: “Respected Guru Dishom has left us all. Today, I have become empty…”

The late Jharkhand CM was receiving treatment at the hospital for an extended period of time in the national capital.

In April, Shibu Soren was given the designation of “founding patron”, and Hemant Soren was elected the central president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) at the party’s 13th central convention. With this, Soren officially took the reins of the party from his father.

Condoling his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, “Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.
