10 ‘militants’ killed in Manipur’s Chandel near Myanmar border

Ten suspected militants have been killed in an ongoing operation near the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Chandel district, the army said Thursday.

According to a statement issued by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, an Assam Rifles unit under the III Corps launched an operation Wednesday, acting on a “specific intelligence on movement of armed cadres nearby New Samtal village, Khengjoy Tehsil, Chandel district near the Indo-Myanmar border.”

“During the operation, the troops were fired upon by suspected cadres to which they quickly reacted, redeployed and retaliated in a calibrated and measured manner. In the ensuing firefight, 10 cadres were neutralised and a sizeable quantity of arms and ammunition have been recovered,” said the statement.

According to an official, the operation is still ongoing as of Thursday morning, and information on the identity and affiliation of those killed and the armed cadres will follow as details emerge.

Chandel is a tribal-majority hill district, predominantly Naga.
