Yamuna crosses warning mark in Delhi, alert for flood-like situation
The water level of the Yamuna river in Delhi reached 204.88 metres at the Old Railway Bridge here on Thursday, crossing the warning level of 204.5 metres, officials said. The danger mark is 205.3 metres, and evacuation starts at 206 metres. The Old Railway Bridge serves as a key observation point.
An alert has been issued to all the agencies concerned to take precautionary measures to deal with a potential flood-like situation.
The alarming rise comes after continuous rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season, alongside prolonged floods and waterlogging across the country, including the national capital region.
In Uttar Pradesh, cities like Prayagraj and Varanasi saw intense rainfall, that led to a flood-like situation there. This severely affected daily lives due to waterlogging and overflowing drains, with the swollen Ganga in Varanasi submerging several ghats.
On Saturday, the Ganga reached close to the danger mark in Varanasi, after intense downpours drenched the mountains to the plains for several consecutive days, the report added.
All boats running on the Ganga have been banned. According to the Central Water Commission, the river was currently flowing at 69.98 metres on Saturday, which is very close to the 71.26-metre danger mark in Varanasi, the report read.
In Uttarakhand’s Rishikesh, continous heavy showers caused the water level of the Ganga to rise significantly at Parmarth Niketan Ashram. River water was reportedly seen to touch the idol of Lord Shiva at the ashram’s Aarti Sthal.
Himachal Pradesh, battling the deadly monsoons for nearly two months now, has reported a total of 199 deaths and a cumulative loss of over ₹1905.5 crore during the monsoon season from June 20 to August 6 this year, according to a report by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).
