TVK rally stampede: Madurai Bench of Madras High Court to hear TVK’s case on September 29; death toll rises to 40

The Madras High Court on Sunday (September 28, 2025) cancelled the hearing of a case against actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) at 4.30 p.m. The High Court cancelled the hearing after reading the papers and found that it is not a new case but an impleading petition in a case already pending before the court.

The death toll in the Karur stampede tragedy has risen to 40 after police sources confirmation on Sunday (September 28, 2025). Retired Judge Aruna Jagadeesan of one-woman Inquiry Commission, constituted to probe the stampede in Karur, began her inquiry with a visit to the venue of the Saturday’s meeting at Velusamypuram in Karur on Sunday (September 28, 2025).

In a social media post later, Vijay called the tragedy an irreparable loss and said “no words of comfort can truly ease the pain of losing loved ones.” He also announced ₹20 lakh would be given to the families of each of those who died and ₹2 lakh to those injured and undergoing treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from PMNRF to be given to the next of kin, and ₹50,000 to the injured. Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin has announced a solatium of ₹10 lakh to the families of those who died in the stampede, and ₹1 lakh for those who were injured.
