Rock Singer James’ Bangladesh Concert Cancelled After Mob Attacks Venue, Throws Bricks; 20 Injured
Bangladesh’s cultural space came under fresh strain after a mob attacked a rock concert by popular musician Nagar Baul James in Faridpur. The incident has once again questioned the growing intolerance and safety for artists amid ongoing unrest in the country.
What we know about the attack at Faridpur venue?
The concert was scheduled to begin at 9 pm on Friday, December 26, at a school campus in Faridpur and had drawn a full crowd. However, shortly before the performance, a group described as “outsiders” attempted to enter the venue forcibly. They reportedly hurled bricks and tried to take control of the stage, creating panic among organisers and attendees.
As the situation worsened, the organisers decided to cancel the concert to prevent injuries. James, widely known as the “Guru of Rock” in Bangladesh, managed to leave the venue safely and was not harmed.
However, at least 25 people got injured in the incident, local media reported.
The incident has triggered wider concerns about the safety of cultural events in Bangladesh, with many questioning whether artists can perform freely amid rising radical influence.
Bangladesh unrest
Bangladesh has seen escalating unrest since December 18, following the assassination of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Osman Hadi, also known as Sharif Osman Hadi. He was shot on December 12, allegedly by members of the Chhatra League, who reportedly fled to India.
Since then, several cities, including Dhaka and Chittagong, have witnessed riots, arson, and mob violence. Media offices such as Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, as well as cultural organisations like Chhayanaut and Udichi, have been targeted. Homes of political leaders have also been attacked.
