A key accused in the murder of a Hindu police officer in Bangladesh was detained at Delhi airport, while he was allegedly trying to flee to Europe.
The accused, identified as Mahdi Ahmed Reza Hasan, was intercepted by the Immigration Department at the airport. He was detained by authorities while attempting to leave the country.
Subsequently, he was deported to Bangladesh after the completion of the necessary procedures.
KILLED COP, BOASTED ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Mehdi had earlier claimed responsibility for the murder of a Hindu police officer, named Santosh Chowdhary, in 2024. A video of him making the statement while sitting inside a police station in Bangladesh had made rounds online.
Officials acted on the inputs hinting at Mehdi’s arrival in Delhi, and intercepted him before he could board his flight to Finland.
WHO WAS SANTOSH CHOWDHARY?
On August 5, 2024, SI Santosh Chowdhary was killed at the Baniyachang Police Station and his body was later hung from a tree.
It was during the unrest in the country following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led government. What began as a students’ protest soon turned into violence against the minorities, with Hindus being attacked and their places of worship being vandalised.
BBC Bangla published a report on the killing, raising claims that the officer had been “specifically targeted.” However, the report was later withdrawn, the Bangladesh Post reported.
WHAT TRIGGERED THE UNREST?
The unrest began with student-led protests in Bangladesh against the country’s controversial quota system, which allowed 30 per cent reservation of government jobs for relatives and dependents of the freedom fighters (Mukti Joddhas), who participated in the 1971 Liberation War.
The protests — which spread to the educational institutes across Bangladesh — culminated in the ouster of the Awami League government.
