CRPF Jawan, Arrested For ‘Spying For Pakistan’, Was Posted In Pahalgam Before Attack

The CRPF jawan, who was arrested for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistan Intelligence Officers (PIOs), was posted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam and got transferred just six days before the terror attack that killed 26 people, said sources.

The CRPF jawan, identified as Moti Ram Jat, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for allegedly sharing classified information related to national security with PIOs for monetary benefits since 2023, according to officials.

Moti Ram Jat served in the 116th Battalion of the CRPF as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) before his transfer.

The NIA, which arrested Moti Ram Jat in Delhi, revealed he was receiving funds from Pakistani officials through multiple channels. The agency is interrogating him, an official said.

He has been remanded to NIA custody until June 6 by the Special Court at Patiala House.

He established contact with Pakistani handlers via social media, sources said.

Investigations further revealed that a Pakistani handler had transferred several lakhs of rupees to the bank account of his wife.

The CRPF initiated a probe following suspicious online activity that emerged after “Operation Sindoor.” After four days of rigorous interrogation, Jat was dismissed from service and handed over to the NIA on May 21.

The probe agency has also accused him of passing intelligence inputs regarding operations conducted by security forces, and the location of security installations to Pakistani operatives.

Notably, the accusations were made in the backdrop of his posting in Pahalgam, where terrorists opened fire on tourists, killing 26 of them, just six days after his transfer.

In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, security agencies have ramped up anti-espionage efforts, resulting in the arrest of over 15 people from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh over the last two weeks.

Preliminary findings point to a Pakistan-backed spy network active in northern India.

Among the arrested are two women — Jyoti Malhotra, a Haryana resident with 3.77 lakh YouTube subscribers and 1.33 lakh Instagram followers, and 31-year-old Guzala from Punjab.

Both were allegedly in contact with Pakistani officer Ehsan-ur-Rahim, also known as Danish, posted at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.
