Alert in Mangaluru after 30-year-old murder accused is hacked to death

A 30-year-old man, who was a main accused in a murder in Surathkal in 2022, was hacked to death in Bajpe in Mangaluru on Thursday night. City police have set up checkposts and have intensified patrolling after the incident.

Fazil’s death
The police gave the name of the victim as Suhas Shetty. He was the main accused in the murder of 23-year-old Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Mangalwarpete in Katipalla, who was killed in front of a shop in Surathakal on July 28,2022. Fazil was murdered two days after the killing of BJP worker Praveen Nettaru.

In a statement, police said on Thursday night Suhas Shetty was travelling in a vehicle along with his friends, Sanjay, Prajwal, Anvith, Latheesh, and Shashank. Around 8.30 p.m. the vehicle was intercepted by group of assailants who came in a car and a pickup vehicle.

The assailants, around six persons, attacked Shetty with sharp weapons, which caused grievous injury. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where Shetty succumbed.

A case was registered at Bajpe Police Station. Multiple teams were formed to nab the accused. Mangaluru City Police is committed to ensuring swift justice and maintaining law and order, the police said.

Large number of people, including former MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, visited the mortuary of the hospital, where the Shetty’s body was kept.

Accused in many cases
Shetty was an accused in a total of five criminal cases, including two murder cases, in Mangaluru City and Dakshina Kannada district police limits. Of the five cases, he was convicted in one case and acquitted in two cases. Trial was on in the two murder cases, the police said.
